MEET THE FOUNDER
Hippie Mike is a man of creativity, endless skills, and a passion for building—whether it’s skateparks, communities, or opportunities. A master craftsman at heart, Mike has spent his life creating unique, custom projects, applying the same precision and dedication to everything he touches. A devoted skateboarder and snowboarder since 1986, he lives for the thrill of speed and channels his energy into constantly learning, teaching, and pushing boundaries.
After dedicating 15 years to strengthening the skateboarding community in Surrey, BC, Mike moved to Hope, BC, where he opened HMI Skate Park—a much-needed indoor space that quickly became a hub for skaters of all ages and skill levels. More than just a park, HMI embodied Mike’s lifelong mission to bring people together and provide positive opportunities for future generations.
Mike’s influence extends far beyond building skateparks. As the founder of Protest Skateboards, he created a platform for supporting grassroots skaters and developing new talent. One of his most notable protégés is Andy Anderson, a skateboarding prodigy who became a global icon and Olympic athlete. Recognizing Andy’s extraordinary talent and unique vision, Mike not only gave Andy his first sponsorship through Protest but also mentored him during the critical early stages of his career. Under Mike’s guidance, Andy developed into one of the most creative and versatile skaters in the world, inspiring countless others to pursue their own path in skateboarding.
Mike also owned Authentic, a skate shop in Surrey that served as a gathering place for the local skateboarding community. Whether it was through the shop, his events, or his mentorship, Mike always prioritized fostering unity, inclusivity, and equality. His unwavering belief that everyone deserves an equal chance has been the driving force behind everything he does, from organizing legendary skate events to mentoring the next generation of skaters.
Hippie Mike’s legacy is one of passion, innovation, and impact. He has left an indelible mark on skateboarding culture, not just by building parks and brands but by building people up. Whether through his work with Andy Anderson, his indoor skatepark, or his dedication to helping others, Hippie Mike has proven that skateboarding is more than just a sport—it’s a way to bring people together and change lives
